Lonely

“It’s okay, you don’t have to fall in love with me,” she joked as she sat in his truck late one night, “I know that whatever this is, it isn’t love, I know feelings can’t get involved,” though she spoke the words, she didn’t believe them herself. She wanted nothing more than to be his. Young and dumb, that’s what she was, just afraid of being lonely. She knew he could break her heart but she handed it to him without batting an eye. She’s had her eye on him for a while now. Though the timing was never right, it couldn’t be more wrong than it is now, he has a girlfriend. How could he do that to her? How could she?

“I wish things were different,” he sighed while peering out of the windshield into pitch darkness, “I know this is wrong but this just feels right. You and I,” he said softly looking at her. Her heart sunk more, she knew this was wrong too but she couldn’t stop her feelings. They both knew it was going to have to end, though neither one of them wanted it to. He reached his hand over and placed it upon her upper thigh. Smiling down at her as he began to lean in, their lips met and it felt like the world stopped. Butterflies arose in her stomach as she reached for his cheek. She wasn’t ready to let him go. She felt like she was his, but she knew he didn’t feel the same. A pain in her chest began to form as he pulled away. They both glanced at the clock as a silence fell over them.

3:37 A.M. the clock read.

He needed to go, she was expecting him home. As he began to drive towards her car, her stomach began to hurt. Holding her head down so he couldn’t see her upset.

“No feelings,” she reminded herself as he pulled up next to her car. He came to a stop and she reached for the door. Grabbing her arm and pulling her back, he wrapped his arms around her and placed a deep kiss upon her lips. She inched as close as she could to him not ready to let go. They stayed this way, only for a short while but it was enough to make her fall for him more. As they pulled away, they held each other and looked into each others eyes.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered placing his hand on her cheek. Biting her lip and nodding, she pulled away and grabbed the door handle.

“Goodnight,” she softly said as she was climbing out of his truck.

“Goodnight,” he sighed as she shut the door. With one final wave, he went on his way home. Climbing into her car, she just sat there for while in the silence. Taking a deep breath, the tears began to fall. The pain she felt in her chest was unlike any other. Her chest ached, she could feel her heart shattering. Placing her head in her hands, the tears kept falling. She knew this was wrong. How could she allow herself to fall for a man who was already taken? She knew someone was going to get hurt in the end, and she knew she was the one who deserved it. Though he cheated on the woman he claimed he loved, she was the one who wouldn’t feel remorse for being the reason it fell apart. Both selfish, but both too selfish to care. Her heart began to ache as she drove towards her house. She know she didn’t love him, but she was just afraid of being lonely.
